Athlete of the Season ApologiesTo whom it may concern,
We want to submit our greatest apologies to our readers and all of the athletes for this past week's press release in regards to the large school male field athlete of the season. Our goal is to be strictly objective, to build excitement in high school track and field, and recognize outstanding performances. The results we use are based on runnercard.com and the long jump results have a type error which effected our selection. We are so sorry for the confusion and the discrepancy. For those who would like to know more about how our athlete of the week selection works here's a little more information. The marks have to take place at a state qualifying meet because of the timing and wind measuring process that takes place, then the meet director has to post the results on runnercard.com. (Because that's a requirement for any mark that qualifies an athlete for state, which makes it our most reliable source, obviously as noted before there have been a few discrepancies there also....so for next season we will cross it with the meet results that we have access to.) Then from there, we select the Athlete of the week using a set of conversion tables developed by the Idaho State University track and cross country coach which allows us to compare results from the 100 meter dash to the 2 mile run based upon a point system. After reviewing the results again and crossing them with a few other sites to make sure of their accuracy we have selected Grant Evans a Senior from Springville to be the Athlete of the season. Grant has had an exceptional season in the shot put and has received athlete of the week honors previously. He finished off the season with a state title in the shot put with a 54 feet 2 inches throw. Evan's best mark of the season came from the Utah county invite where he threw a mark of 54 feet 11.5 inches. Congratulations to Evans and again our apologizes for the mistake. Because this year was such a unique year, and one of Utah most outstanding seasons in high school track and field, with several state records broken, there were a lot of all star athletes that did not get recognized that really should have. Many weeks there were athletes that were within .2 points of each other in the selection process. This just goes to show how talented this year's athletes were and give lots of promise to next year's season. Those of us at UHSTCA are looking forward to next season. Feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions or comments! Thank you again for all of your support! Sincerely, UHSTCA Interns Athletes of the Season2012 was a great year for Utah track. Competitors all worked very hard this season. Records were broken, events won, but only a few came out on top. Here are a few athletes whose marks made them not only top in various meets and events, but also top in the season. We’d like to recognize these individuals for being incredible athletes of the season!
Brenna Porter, Sky View; Cam Dopp, Woods Cross; Erica Birk, North Summit; Ammon Mitchell, San Juan; Sarah Orr, Park City; Scott Nichols, Bingham; McKayla Worthin, Emery; Sage Palmer, Enterprise; and Max Lewis, Duchesne. Congratulations to our Athletes of the Season! Visit our Athletes of the Week tab to read more about this year's winners. Thank you for all of your support throughout this season! See you all next year! Go Track & Field!! :) Congratulations 2012 State ChampionsCongratulations to this year's State Champions!
Boy's: 5A- Davis 4A- Maple Mountain 3A- Pine View 2A- Grand 1A- Duchesne Girl's: 5A- Davis 4A- Orem 3A- Ogden 2A- North Summit 1A- Rich State Records in JeopardyThis year has been an amazing year for Utah track and field. We’ve had some tremendous talent and some incredible races throughout the season and as state approaches this weekend here are some athletes to watch for as they try to break some state records.
In the sprinting events, Lauren Baxter of Timpview is poised to make many state records fall this weekend at state. Sue Devries' 30 year old state record time in the 100M of 12.00 will be in jeopardy as Baxter's PR is a quick 12.24 seconds. Baxter's top 200M time of 24.94 is also very close to beating Kaisa Rosenberg's state record of 24.62. Amazingly Baxter also holds the top time this season for the 400M with a speedy 55.89. Heidi Magill's state record of 54.79 could also be broken by Baxter. Baxter will be one record breaking athlete to see this weekend at the state meet. In the 100M Hurdles there is a tie between Tawnie Moore of Fremont and Adelyn Jones of Davis for the top time at 14.73 seconds. Angela Kaplar's state record time of 14.37 seconds could go down by one or even both of these amazing hurdlers. The 100M Hurdles will be one great race to watch this weekend at state. Cole Lambourne of Riverton in the boys 400M has show great progression throughout his senior season, and he hopes to end his season by setting the 5a state record; which would set the overall state record in the event. His personal best is 47.76, the 5a record is 47.01. So it is within reach for him. Jake Arslanian of Pine View has a personal best of 10.81 in the 100 meter, which makes him only 0.19 seconds away from the 4A state record. In the 200 he has a personal best of 21.66 which ties the 4a record. He should be state champion and the 4A record holder after finals on Saturday. In the 100 meter Dash for small schools the name to watch out for is Sage Palmer of Enterprise High School. He has performed well all season in not only the field events but also in the sprinting events. The state record for his division is 10.85, Palmer is just a little over 1 tenth of a second away from that with a season best of 10.98. As Arslanian and Palmer compete on the BYU track this weekend, watch the clock and cheer them on! In the distance events there are a lot of athletes that are not only racing against each other but also the clock as they shoot for the record, starting with Brad Nye. Brad is now considered one of the best distance runners in our state’s history. He started out his season with becoming the indoor national champion in the 1600m run by outkicking the top runner in the nation. He continued his dominance by bringing his speed outdoors. He ran a state leading time in the 1600m almost breaking the state record then he broke the state record in the 800m run by becoming the first Utahan high school athlete to break the 1:52 barrier. Then adding on to his impressive resume he ran a 9:26 3200m and a 49.79 400m races. At state he has a fantastic shot at breaking Luke Puskedra’s mark of 4:09.28 in the 1600m and bettering his own mark of 1:51.89 in the 800m. He’s also entered in the 3200m at state and with his leg speed the possibilities are endless for that race. On the girls side of the track we’ve arguably had one of the greatest years of distancing running in the history of Utah with 7 state and classification records falling to these women. The state record most in jeopardy is the 1600m which was set this year by Ashleigh Warner. She and Natalie Shields, another outstanding runner, will both be shooting at the mark of 4:50.13. Shields, who also went under the old mark in the 1600m, will be looking to beat her state record 3200m mark which she also set earlier this season. These women will definitely put on a race you will not want to miss. Erica Birk who also went sub 4:51 in the 1600 with Warner and Shields hopes to better her 2A records in the 800M, the 1600M, and the 3200M. She has had a very successful senior season and she hopes to end it improving her records. She has a very impressive spread of times and it will be one to watch run collegiately. In the small school division we might see a shot taken at the boy’s 2A classification record in the 800m run. Ammon Blauer of Parowan high school is less than half a second off that mark of 1:56.23. Keep an eye out on that kid as he’ll try his best to get his name in the history books. In the field events, Megan Glasman of Park City has continually been a strong candidate for the UHSTCA Athlete of the week. Her top mark in the Javelin, 143 ft 6 in, has already topped the state record. It will be exciting to see if she can top that at State. In the long jump event, Arianna Reay of Monticello has also bested the 1A state record with her top mark of 17 ft 3 in. Representing the small schools, she should have a good performance next week. Cheer her on as she tries to increase her record! Also representing the small schools, Mckayla Worthen of Emery has done excellent in the Discus Throw. Her top mark of 167 ft 3.75 helps her shatter the previous state record of 130 ft 3 in. In the boys field events there are a couple of names to watch for. In the Long Jump Scott Nichols of Bingham high school has performed well all season, and has shattered the previous record of 23 feet 9.5 inches, with his mark at 28 ft 3.5 inches. Watch as he tries to best his mark this weekend. In the Javelin throw, Skyler Porcaro of Maple Mountain also beat the previous state record at the Region 8 meet this last week with a throw of 198 feet 10 inches. As he competes against the best of the best, we will see if he can continue to throw a better mark and raise the bar for the next year’s state record chasers. Congratulations to all these athletes who have had exceptional seasons and good luck to all the athletes competing at state! May 9 Athletes of the WeekCongratulations to this week's Athletes of the Week!
This week's winners were: Ashleigh Warner, Mountain View; Brad Nye, Davis; Erica Birk, North Summit; Ammon Mitchell, San Juan; Taylir Garrison, American Fork; Austin Kafentzis, Jordan; Rachel Garrett, Grand County; and Max Lewis, Duchesne. Visit our Athletes of the Week tab to read more about this week's amazing times and great competitors! Congratulations! BYU Invite Athletes to WatchBecause Utah is such a big state and we have so many high schools throughout the different valleys, there are many athletes that never see their real competition until state. There are only a few major meets where a majority of the state comes to compete, one being the BYU track and field invite. So to get you pumped up for state, we’ve selected a few events where there are a few head to head match ups to lookout for as you watch the track!
Girls 100 Meter Lauren Baxter of Timpview High School, who was just been edged out of being the UHSTCA athlete of the week a couple weeks ago has had an excellent season with the top ranks in the 100, 200, and the 400 meter. She will be matching up against Sylvia Hanson of Davis who was the UHSTCA athlete of the week a few weeks prior with a mark of 12.37, just 5 hundredths of a second behind Baxter’s top time. This will be a close race; one for the camera’s to decide the winner! Girls Shot Put In the girls shot put we have an intense level of competition between Siera Bernard of Herriman with a mark of 40 ft 3 inches, Sosinsa Salima of Woods Cross with a mark of 39 feet 5 inches, and Heilala Havea of Copper Hills with a mark of 39 feet and 5.25 inches. Each of these ladies has continued to show their strength on the field, and as they compete against each other it proves to be a tight competition, one you won’t want to miss. Boys Shot Put In the Boys event we have some Athletes from schools that rarely compete against each other so this should be close competition. We have Grant Evans a senior at Springville who has the top mark of the season with a 54’11.5” who will be going head to head with Miller Crawford of Riverton with a mark of 51’8.5” and Austin Micklson of Pineview with a mark of 50’3.5”. Austin and Miller will be sure to give Grant a run for his money this weekend. Girls Javelin Megan Glasmann of Park City and a UHSTCA athlete of the week will be competing against Joni Warnick of Riverton and Megan Loveland of Dixie. Glasmann has the top mark of the season with 143’6”. Warnick and Loveland are close behind with marks of 136’2.5” and 129’07” respectively. Boys Javelin This season the athletes in the Javelin have continued to show their dominance in the world of track and field continuing to receive honors of UHSTCA athlete of the week nearly every week. This event is definitely one you won’t want to miss because Austin Kafentzis of Jordan who is this week’s Athlete of the Week with a mark of 190’00” will be matching up against Skyler Porcaro of Maple Mountain also a former Athlete of the week with his mark of 189’ 3” and Sage Palmer of Enterprise who has also been Athlete of the Week many times throughout the season with his top mark of 183’06”. This will be the event to watch this meet as these young men go head to head against each other! Girls High Jump Audrey Muir from Union high school, previously the UHSTCA athlete of the week, is currently ranked first in the high jump. However Kailey Hansen from Herriman holds the same mark of 5 ft 7 inches. Both of these young ladies will be competing against each other for the first time at a state qualifying meet this season. Boys Long Jump For the long jump the boys have a close competition as the top athlete Porter Harris from Desert Hills will be fighting for his ranking against Marcus Daley of Davis. Daley’s best mark is 22 feet 5.25 inches which is just 4 inches short of Harris’ mark. This promises to be a close competition. Boys 3200 Meter This is a race you won’t want to miss! There have been some nationally ranked times in this event from some of our athletes this season and this weekend two of them will be matching up head to head. Brayden Cromar of Davis and Connor Mantz of Sky view will be competing; they have the 2nd and 3rd rankings in the state with a difference of 1 second! This race is one you will want to watch from start to finish! Girls 1600 meter In the Girls 1600 meter Natalie Shields of East and Jamie Stokes of Ogden will go head to head with the top marks in the state. Jamie has been an Athlete of the week this season and both girls have a top mark of 4:54 for the season. It will be interesting to see who breaks the tie and emerges as the winner at the BYU invite! Boys 100 Meter Sage Palmer from Enterprise will compete against Tyler Liddiard from Murray. This season Tyler has the top time over Sage by only one one-hundredth of a second! This will be the only time these two athletes will see each other this season! Boys 110 Hurdles Cale Strong of Wasatch, 2 time athlete of the week winner, owns the top mark in the Boys 110 hurdles, but Cole Eisenhower of Roy and Weston Cropper of Delta are not far behind him. All three of these athletes are within one second of each other at 14 seconds. They will all be tested to see who really is the best 110 hurdler in the state! Boys 300 Hurdles Although Cale Strong also holds the top spot in the state for 300 hurdles with a time of 38.22, he will face stiff competition from Caden Dortch of Westlake, and JJ Morley of Union. Their times are all very competitive, while this could be their last time meeting head to head in high school. Who will remain at the top of the Rankings after this meet? Watch and find out!
